Vatan is a renowned Gujarati vegetarian restaurant located at 409 3rd Avenue in Manhattan's Kips Bay neighborhood, which has been serving an authentic all-you-can-eat prix-fixe thali dinner since opening in 1996 . After 11 years in business, the restaurant closed in October 2007 for a full renovation and reopened in October 2008 as a new, larger, and improved space . The restaurant celebrates the true flavors of Gujarat and the ambiance of a typical Indian courtyard, transporting diners to India with its extraordinary decor . The windowless dining room is designed like a life-size diorama of a rural village, featuring a 20-foot tall faux banyan tree, hand-painted tables, thatched roofs over every booth, murals of children chasing lambs, and even a wishing well with a plastic turtle . Guests can choose to sit cross-legged on elevated, pillow-strewn alcoves, adding to the immersive experience . The dining experience at Vatan is a three-course unlimited vegetarian feast served on a traditional metal thali . For approximately $29-34 per person (depending on the source), guests receive eight to ten different dishes in their own compartments with each course, and servers will bring unlimited refills of any dish without requiring guests to leave their seats . The menu includes authentic Gujarati specialties such as spicy chickpeas, samosas stuffed with ground vegetables and peas, chilled mango soup, mini samosas, sev puri, chana masala, vada, khichdi, and various spiced vegetables served with exotic rices and fluffy breads .
