Founded in 1932 by Italian immigrants Nick and Patsy D’Agostino, D’Agostino Supermarkets Inc. became a pioneering force in New York’s grocery industry by helping to introduce the modern supermarket concept—offering meat, dairy, produce, and baked goods all under one roof. Over the decades, the chain earned its iconic slogan “New York’s Grocer” and became a true cultural fixture, largely because its sturdy white plastic shopping bags, known as “D’Ag Bags,” were famously used as fashion accessories by models in the 1970s. The brand’s deep ties to the city were further solidified through frequent appearances in films and TV shows like Friends, Will & Grace, and Ghostbusters II. Renowned for its high-quality meat and produce, often featuring on-site butchers and a strong selection of gourmet and organic items, D’Agostino’s catered consistently to middle- and upper-income shoppers. However, after facing increasing financial pressures from intense competition and rising real estate costs, the company sold a controlling interest in 2018 to John Catsimatridis, the owner of rival chain Gristedes, marking the end of an era for this storied New York institution.
