About Chhen Design

Chhen Design is a creative architecture and design practice based in Bhaktapur, Nepal, known for its focus on traditional Newari “Chhen” (house) architecture blended with modern design concepts. The firm is involved in designing and restoring residential buildings, heritage-style homes, boutique spaces, and culturally inspired structures that reflect the rich architectural identity of the Kathmandu Valley. The design studio emphasizes the use of local materials such as brick, wood, and traditional craftsmanship techniques while also integrating modern structural safety standards, especially for earthquake resilience. Many of its works are inspired by Bhaktapur’s historic urban fabric, including courtyards, carved wooden windows, and compact multi-story Newari house forms.
